She was launched at Chatham in 1670 as a successor to the Royal Sovereign. Designed by Pett the younger (who had worked on the construction of the Royal Sovereign). She was a near 1,500 ton vessel with keel length of 131 feet (~ 40m). She carried a wartime crew of 780 men and was armed with 100 guns. The Prince began service in 1672 when she carried the flag of the Duke of York, then Lord High Admiral of England and later King James II at the battle of Solebay, in the 3rd Dutch war. The battle ended victory -for England- the Prince was so badly damaged that the Duke temporarily shifted his flag. The Captain of the Fleet, Sir J. Cox, was killed on board in the course of battle. The Prince survived until 1692 when much of her salvaged timber was used in the building of the Royal William. |
