| Designed for Adolphus Fowler. Built in 1898 in Ireland. Now named Pen Duick (the name means a type of small bird in the Breton language) was designed by William Fife of Fairlie in 1898. Originally named Yum, she was sold to France in 1902. After many owners and eight different names, she was bought by Guy Tabarly in 1938. Guy was the father of Eric Tabarly who inherited the yacht in 1959. Eric build a new hull in G.R.P. using the original hull as a plug. the largest glassfibre hull in the world at that time. Although the hull is glassfibre, the deck, skylights and cockpit are in timber exactly as the original yacht and new mahogany accommodation was installed. The sail area was increased to 1,750 sq. ft. to improve light weather performance and the lead ballast also increased accordingly. From 1962 to 1983 Eric Tabarly competed in and won many long distance races in other yachts named Pen Duick (6 in all) and became a sporting hero in France. In 1983 he retired from ocean racing and returned to his first love – the original Pen Duick. As a competitive yachtsman he raced Pen Duick in many classic yacht events. Fast and graceful her black topsides and jackyard topsail are well known in many European ports. Tragically Eric fell overboard from her and was drowned on June 13th 1998 on passage from Benodet to the Clyde for the Fife Regatta 100 years from the date of her launch at Fairlie. |
